JOIN THE BAMIT BOARD

The Board functions as a professional organization governed by the BAMIT Bylaws and the Code of Ethics. Additionally, there is a Policies and Procedures Manual that documents our operations.

BAMIT has been growing - the number of programs has increased; these programs require program management and funds. The only limitation of BAMIT's impact is having hands on deck to do the work.

BAMIT is seeking committed individuals who can serve in this important role. The Board meets 7 times/year, and all Board members serve on at least one Board Committee. The approximate time commitment is about 7 to 10 hours per month.

For the detailed description of Board Member Responsibilities and committees, please take a look at the BAMIT Bylaws

So why should you get involved by nominating a BAMIT member or self-nominating for the BAMIT Board?

  • You can be the change that makes the difference in the lives and academic progress of contemporary Black students on campus...you remember what it was like...

  • You can be the welcome voice that encourages a bright yet hesitant young Black student to apply to and choose to attend MIT

  • You can join with other BAMIT members who choose to up their level of participation and work together on the Board to advance BAMIT

  • You can both "give back" and "pay it forward" with relatively minimal time commitment relative to the contribution you can make...

The BAMIT Board needs a constant infusion of energy and ideas to keep our momentum going and YOUR PARTICIPATION is the source of that infusion!

Please consider adding your commitment of time and energy to the BAMIT Board! Submit your nomination form to info@bamit.org.

become a Black Educational Counselor

We are mobilizing and deploying large numbers of Black alumni as Educational Counselors (ECs) who can assist the Admissions Office with outreach and interviewing students to help fill the applicant pool.

Educational Counselors:

Interview applicants and help Admissions learn more than what can be gleaned from the application.

Inspire prospective students by sharing your MIT story and experiences. Act as a resource, helping prospective students to learn more about MIT.

Invest about 3 hours per interview (set-up, interview, and submitting interview report), the typical time commitment. ECs set the number of interviews that they are able to conduct.

Impact prospective students by being a vital link between MIT and the next generation of brilliant minds.

To participate sign up to be an EC. In the “Anything else you’d like to tell us?” box, please write “BAMIT.”

By doing so, you can help BAMIT help Admissions identify and encourage the next generation of brilliant minds.

establish NSBE Jr. Chapters

Work with BAMIT members to establish NSBE Jr. Chapters for students in grades 3-12 in your community. Establishing chapters is easy to do — and students are readily available through places of worship, community centers, schools, and more. NSBE offers age-appropriate programming that can be implemented at little to no cost (except for robotics in some cases) so there is no need to create programs to implement. Participant fees are reasonable with a cost of $5/student to become a NSBE Jr. member.

NSBE offers three levels - NSBE Jr.-Pre-college; NSBE for college; and NSBE Professional for graduates. Now more than ever, not only could our establishing NSBE Jr. Chapters across the country and internationally help fill the pipeline, but it also can assist with recruitment efforts, particularly if our chapters are for high school students.

Your efforts in your local community are important!

Contact info@bamit.org if you are interested in getting started.
