BAMIT is seeking a committed volunteer to serve as our representative to the Industrial Advisory Council for Minority Education (IACME) — an influential advisory body that partners closely with MIT’s Office of Academic Community, Empowerment, and Success (OACES).
This role is ideal for a Black alumni who cares deeply about student success, understands our community’s history and priorities, and is ready to bring the Black alumni voice directly into MIT’s decision‑making spaces.
About IACME
Established in 1990–1991, IACME was created to strengthen the connection between industry and MIT’s efforts to support students who have historically faced barriers to access and success. Today, IACME continues to:
- Advise OACES on programs, policies, and student support
- Engage directly with MIT leadership, faculty, and students
- Provide insight on recruitment, retention, equity, and campus climate
- Participate in student‑facing events such as mixers, mentoring, and Momentum presentations
IACME’s mission aligns closely with BAMIT's: to ensure greater retention, academic achievement, and holistic support for MIT students.
Role of the BAMIT Representative
As BAMIT’s ex officio member, the representative ensures that the perspectives and priorities of Black alumni are consistently present in IACME discussions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Attend IACME Meetings (3 per year)

Held in September, January, and July
- In‑person or remote
- Includes business meetings, student mixers, and Momentum presentations

Time commitment: 9–24 hours/year (plus travel if attending in person)
2. Participate in BAMIT Outreach & Engagement (O&E) Committee
- Attend monthly O&E meetings

Time commitment: 12–18 hours/year
3. Serve as a liaison between IACME and BAMIT
- Share updates, insights, and opportunities from IACME/OACES
- Make recommendations for BAMIT action

Time commitment: 3–6 hours/year outside of O&E meetings
4. Bring the BAMIT perspective to IACME
- Offer alumni insight
- Elevate issues relevant to Black students and alumni
- No additional time beyond meeting participation
Total Annual Commitment: 24–48 hours/year
Ideal Qualifications
We are seeking someone who brings:
- Knowledge of BAMIT's mission, operations, and priorities
- Recent, active involvement in BAMIT
- Ability to represent MIT Black alumni perspectives with clarity and confidence
- Understanding of OME/OACES and IACME history (or willingness to learn)
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- Comfort speaking in large groups
- Reliability and follow‑through
- Ability to attend at least one in‑person meeting per year (Cambridge‑area residents preferred but not required)
